Picking a business name can feel like the hardest decision ever! Everything you write down you hate and everything you love is already taken, or maybe you just have no idea where to start.

No worries, here are some quick questions that will help you get the ball rolling.

1. What is your industry and what service do you provide?

List out different words that describe your industry and services.

Example 1: Clothing Line

  • Fashion, retail, e-commerce, clothing, style

Example 2: Social Media Manager

  • Engagement, reach, explore, managing, virtual, social, media, Instagram, IG

Example 3: Copywriter

  • Sales, communication, words, letters, blogs, articles

2. What descriptive words embody you and your business?

Write down any adjectives, places, feelings and traits that describe you and your business.

Example 1: Clothing Line

  • Linen, coast, ocean, eco, pure, essential, care, fresh, denim, sand

Example 2: Social Media Manager

  • Fun, feminine, ambitious, bright, palm tree, trustworthy, LA, Palm Springs, spirited

Example 3: Copywriter

  • Fast, bold, NYC, city life, energetic, clear, modern, high-end

3. From the last 2 questions, think of your dream client and circle the words that they would connect with the most. Then start pairing them together.

Pair 2 to 3 words together and aim for something short, sweet and memorable.

Example 1: Clothing Line

  • Sandy Styles, Pure Essentials, Coastal Cloth, Fresh Fashion, Pure Essentials

Example 2: Social Media Manager

  • Spirited Media, LA Social, Palm Tree Managing, IG Reach

Example 3: Copywriter

4. See if the domain name is available

Go to Squarespace Domains to see if your fav business name options are available. Aim for a domain ending in .com, but there are many other great options to pick from!

Ex) .club / .org / .studio / .space / .me

5. Make sure you Google search those names

Do a quick Google search of your top business names and see if anyone in your country already has a business with that name. That would not be cool.

6. Register your business name

Each country and state has their own website that will allow you to register your own business name. Do a quick google “Register my business name” and something for your area should pop up! There usually is a registration fee, but it’s totally worth it so you can avoid any legal issues.
